Mon. 6/1/15 Why Lil Mama's "Sausage" is a great Hip-Hop song and video
Ok, Black Twitter I get it, ever since Lil Mama walked on stage uninvited at the VMA's and ruined Jay-Z and Alicia Keys performance of "Empire State of mind", some of you have hated and will never give her a pass for this. All others follow me. Yes, the hook/chorus is from a viral vine, but that's the beauty of it, a hip-pop fun song. This song and video is like a Hip-Hop Keyser Soze(Movie: The Usual Suspects), "Where's Waldo" hodge podge of hip hop classics and influences gumbo. I will now present the video, and point out and present videos for some of the references in the song. Lil Mama - Sausage.
The beat from the Slick Rick classic "Mona Lisa", the ending also uses the interpolation from Dionne Warwick's "Walk on by". Slick Rick - Mona Lisa.
:07 in "Sausage" - Everybody get up - Teena Marie "Square Biz" at the :10 mark. All good white female R&B singers and rappers, Teena Marie is the mother to your style. Peep the infamous Rick James from "I'm Rick James b***h" fame, at the 3:01 mark tell Teena Marie the ladies call him Slick Rick. Teena Marie - Square Biz.
:09 Atown - Good Morning to you da birds are chirping, :12 D.J. Rogers "Say You Love Me" - 3:16 mark. DJ Rogers - Say you love me.
:15 Big Sean - "IDFWU", :32 Real Harlem Shaking, not the crazy costumes viral thing, :39 first Wu-Tang Clan reference - "C.R.E.A.M", :42 Fetty Wap - "Trap Queen", :44 second Wu-Tang Clan reference "Method Man" - :28 mark. Wu-Tang Clan - Method Man.
:59 Lil Mama referencing her breakout hit "Lip Gloss" (Whatchu know bout me?), 1:01 Double entendre hook/chorus: eggs, bacon(turkey), grits, sausage(turkey), for the kids. 1:02 Polaris Slingshot 3-wheel reverse trike, these are so hip-hop right now. To buy one, you should be required to show your ghetto pass. 1:04 Double entendre hook/chorus: "You better use a condom if you taking that sausage", for the adults. 1:55 Double dose of Mary J. Blige references "Not Gon Cry" visual, with "Seven Days" interpolation 1:20 mark. Mary J. Blige - Not gon cry.
Mary J. Blige - Seven Days ft. George Benson.
2:31 Chedda Da Connect "Flicka Da Wrist", 3:25 2 Milly "Milly Rock". 2 Milly - Milly Rock.
3:34 Dionne Warwick "Walk On By" interpolation :05. Dionne Warwick - Walk on by.
That's it. I hope you enjoyed the ride.
